Why is Breath work so Powerful?
Breathwork supports so many of the challenges we as humans have experienced as a result of suppressing emotion.
Our freedom lies in emancipating these emotions and the breath provides an avenue to do so.
Various combinations of techniques are used with the intent to target the release of this pent-up energy.
There are techniques that focus on releasing trauma, mental, physical, and emotional blocks...anxiety, depression, grief, fear and anger.
Other techniques in breathing put you in a receptive trance state to call in feelings of openness, love, peace, gratitude, clarity and connection in the body. In general, all the techniques release stress and offer an avenue for consciousness to orient from the body.
The Wim Hof Method is particularly effective in helping people improve sleep. His techniques have been shown to improve mental focus, reduce overall stress and increase energy. He finishes his sessions with a cold water immersion and is credited with keeping it simple and user friendly.
“Holotropic States” is a term coined by renowned psychiatrist Stanislav Grof to describe states of consciousness that have healing, transformative and evolutionary potential.
Grof is credited for pioneering holotropic breath work for its ability to transcend the mind, access creative potential and facilitate the emotional healing response in the body.
I'm certified in Somatic Release Breathwork and use it for it's effectiveness in releasing trauma and calling back in the lost parts of ourselves. This modality is particularly powerful in group settings.
There are as many varieties of breath work out there as you can imagine.
The best one is the one you’ll commit to and use regularly.
Keep in mind that emphasizing inhalation triggers the sympathetic part of your nervous system, activating an adrenal response, while focused exhales trigger the para-sympathetic response that slows us down to rest and digest.
Once you bring your nervous system into balance the mind settles down. I've personally observed this amazing quality of stillness return.
It's a game changer!
You can practice daily to interrupt the unconscious default mode network first thing in the morning and give yourself a chance to chose the way you'd like to show up in the world.
Breath work is free, legal and available to you in every moment.
